Early Literacy ProgramWest Side Union School District has organized and implemented a comprehensive and balanced reading program that is research-based and combines skills development with literature and language-rich activities. Our reading program includes oral language development , and systematic skills instruction through literature . Spelling is taught within the context of reading and writing activities . Individual differences are accommodated, and we use varied, flexible grouping strategies . All West Side students read and write daily. The overall goal of all California reading programs is that all students read at grade level by end of third grade. West Side is committed to early intervention and has allocated the funding to provide services to any student, who by mid-first grade is not meeting grade level expectations in reading. Through Title I funding, each classroom has a trained instructional assistant who is available to work one-on-one with students in need of extra support. For students needing more support, referral is made to our Early Literacy Program. Staffed by a special education teacher, students receive a ”double dose” of reading instruction in addition to their regular class time. This intervention is offered prior to special education referral. Students with more serious difficulties are referred to special education for more intensive support and intervention. |
