Welcome West Side's new School Counselor:
Alicia Diaz Said holds a Bachelor's degree in Women's and Gender Studies with a concentration in Women's Health from Sonoma State University and is currently working on a Master's in Social Work at San Jose State University.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, she is a native Spanish speaker and the proud daughter of immigrant parents. In 2001, she moved to Sonoma County with her husband, where they have raised two children, now aged 22 and 16.
For over 15 years, she has been actively involved in Santa Rosa City Schools, volunteering in classrooms, leading reading programs, and advocating for LGBTIQA+ youth. These experiences have fueled her commitment to supporting children’s social-emotional health and helping them form meaningful connections and healthy relationships.
As a social work intern, she is excited and humbled by the opportunity to work with children, helping them discover their strengths, gain new skills, and blossom into the next chapter of their lives.

PLEASE REMEMBER: PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES & MINIMUM DAYS ALL NEXT WEEK
Lately in the garden...
While Kinder has been getting to know the garden, the rules, and its inhabitants, other classes have read The Mess We Made, where afterward students are discussing the pacific garbage patch and how we can help reduce our garbage and use of plastic. They have also been given the challenge to interview an elder about the use and availability of plastic in their childhood.
1st graders planted the lettuce they'll be in charge of, and their 2nd set of carrots. Of course, everyone is eating the delicious cherry tomatoes.
By now, classes have met Peaches, the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake, who is currently residing comfortably in 3rd grade. Snakes, as you may know, do not have hands, therefore 3rd graders have been challenged to try eating like a snake. Also, Brenda Flickner, local butterfly expert, presented 3rd grade with three different kinds of butterfly caterpillars for the students to observe as they feed and turn into chrysalis: Gulf Fritillary, Pipevine, and Anise Swallowtail.
4th graders are working on nature journaling and sheet-mulching their backyard study table area, which should be ready for business this week.
The Middleton Farm-West Side Collaborative Pumpkin Patch is almost ready for harvest. 4th and 5th graders have carved their initials in their chosen pumpkins and 6th graders will be carving and baking seeds.
Fifth graders have been discussing all things compost and have been terrific at taking care of the uneaten food from lunch. The process requires cleaning the buckets, sorting the food and setting up the stations for the next day.
6th graders met with members of N. Sonoma Co. Fire for a campus tour and learned about defensible space, fire preparedness and what it means to be a firefighter. Their posters are hanging in the hallway. Also, they just completed the 2nd Annual 6th Grade Salsa War. They had 40 minutes to make homemade salsa in teams. Their 6 recipes were all award-worthy, but the team titled Pico De Guy (all boys) received the winning votes from tasters in 4th-6th grade.
