Chronic Abseentism as defined by the State
We know that illnesses are not in our control and the State is willing to excuse many absences due to illness. However, the State also recognizes that "excessive excused absences" can also cause a different "truancy" issue. Per California Education Code Section 60901(c)(1), “For purposes of this section, “chronic absentee” means a pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the schooldays in the school year when the total number of days a pupil is absent is divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular day schools of the district, exclusive of Saturdays and Sundays. Once the 10% threshold is reached, a doctor's note is required for each absence for the rest of the school year."
Good attendance habits are formed early in a child's school career. These will improve graduation rates, reduce dropout rates, and close the achievement gap.

In The Garden - Tastes of Spring are coming along. See the photo of the fruitless plum, planted by 6th graders about 6 years ago. 2nd Grade rosemary clippings are beginning to root, Kinder Zinnias are sprouting. All classes are reviewing the compost cycle and sifting soil. Don't forget to enjoy all the narcissus in the parking lot planted by 3rd graders. They are bright and yellow. Can't miss!
